This is a spooky true tale which happened back in 1937. The story took place in a town named Paisley,Scotland. The location was at carlyle quay by the river cart. The main character is my late mother ellen who lived across the street from carlyle quay.During this period families feared for thier lives and often had to evacuate their homes sometimes in the middle of the night to run to a nearby air-raid shelter. It was a time of war and rationing. The building which mum lived in with her family was a three story terraced building and in that building there was a communal toilet outside that many a person had to visit during the night. One night my mum had occassion to go outside to the toilet
which was reached by descending sa spiral stait case. She described to me how at that age (8) she was very light on her feet and of how she had crept down the stairs and was utterly dumbstruck and frozen to the spot when she wss confronted by what I have called (the spectre) in her close! the tall thin figure looked like an old monk who was walking towards the close-mouth and was holding an open book in his hands (almost as if he was still studying something) or had some unfinished business here on earth to attend to. Mum was rigid and didn't move with fear and amazement! she described to me how this spectre had sort of sensed her prescence and of how he suddenly stopped! and turned in a sort of cusp but not looking at her directly and of how he changed his form and turned into a greenish grey smoke
line which cork screwed upwards to the roof of the building and then stretched out alomost to his earthly size and of how this smoke line
startyed to make it's way to the back of the building and in it's attemp it became jagged around the edges as if it was having dsifficulty with the elements to get away. Mum didn't quite make her visit to the toilet after that! she ran bak to her house and never told a soul of what she had witnessed for fear she might get locked up
but mum was a very stable woman and a wise child. Some months later her mum was baking in her scullery and was looking out the window whils't mum sat by the coal fire playing with her cat when granny said "oh! goodness I thought I saw something out back there", "I think it's a monk or something" but shook her head and thought she imagined it. Mum sat in silence and knew in her heart that her mother did not imagine it. Many years passed and mum grew into a beautiful young lady and met and fell in love with my father James and they had seven children and a good marriage. One night mum told me her story and said how she never forgot it!and of how she was so glad thst our house was across the water from her old one and of how it is believed by some that spirits cannot cross water. That thought made her relax a little bit but we also learned that historically there actually were cistertian monks who had lived in Paisley and who had fished in Carlyle quay! all these years ago. After my mum saw that spectre it made her really think about her life in a way that was positive for she always said to us children when we were growing up "always do the right things in life because there is something out there that one day we will all have to answer to " for mum seeing truly was believing and I believed her completely. Some of us may have experiences of one kind or another perhalps through dreams or intuition or "odd things" happening her and there ( I call them postcards from heaven) like little signs we can relate to a loved one who has passed over but there are some of us who get that great bit closer like my mother ellen had all these years ago.
